Colleges: USF felled by Akron, freshmen honored

No.11 USF fell 3-1 to host No.3 Akron on Friday night in the Bulls second exhibition game of the preseason on Friday night.

After Akron took an early lead through Darlington Nagbe, USF tied the game in the 31st minute through Felipe Libreros. It was Libreros' second goal in as many game, but the lead only last six minutes, as Blair Gavin converted a penalty kick to give Akron a 2-1 halftime lead.

Akron added a third with just over a minute to play in the second half through Michael Nanchoff.

"I have to give Akron a lot of credit,” USF head coach George Kiefer said to Gousfbulls.com. “They did a good job for 90 minutes and came out with a lot of intensity. The looked extremely comfortable out there tonight and looked like they were in midseason form. But I think that this was a good experience four our team tonight. We learned a lot and that’s why we play these types of exhibition games. It will help us in our training as we prepare for the regular season.”

Earlier in the day, Hasani Sinclair and Ashani Fairclough were named to the College Soccer News "100 freshmen to watch" list for the season.

USF faces Stetson at home on Thursday in its final exhibition before it opens the regular season against Central Florida on September 1.
