College: Tampa Women lose lead, tie North Georgia

The No.24-ranked University of Tampa lost a two-goal lead with 15 minutes to go as North Georgia forced a 2-2 draw in the Spartans’ opening game of the season on Friday evening at Pepin-Rood Stadium.

The Spartans had taken a 16th minute lead, Jazmin Perry finding the back of the net after being put in by Samantha Kay, and doubled their lead 10 minutes into the second half as freshman Sara Kneeland scored her first goal for the school.

But despite recording a 20-7 advantage in shots, the Spartans were unable to add to their lead as North Georgia goalkeeper Jessica English recorded seven saves, and that allowed the Saints to rally late. Casey Smith pulled a goal back in the 77th minute, and Natalie Douglass added a second four minutes later to tie the game.

The Spartans return to the Pepin-Rood field on Sunday as they face No.9 Grand Valley State at 12:30 p.m.
