Colleges: Lions run rampant in opener

Saint Leo’s mens soccer team put away the concerns of losing last season’s leading scorer Eusebio Montoya for the moment with a 7-0 drubbing of Clearwater Christian College in its opening game of the season on Thursday night.

Former Freedom High standout Bobby Huertas recorded his first hat trick for the Lions, finding the net once before halftime and twice after.

Jonathan Glenn, who had 11 goals last season, opened the scoring in the third minute with a header. Huertas then doubled the lead shortly before halftime before the floodgates opened in the second half.

Leonardo Nogueira made it 3-0 shortly after the break before Huertas scored two goals in three minutes. He first capitalized after the Lions had been on a penalty kick with a low driven shot into the right corner and then completed his hat trick two minutes later.

The Lions outshot the Cougars 18-1 as Freddy Menor and Stephen Tatum completed the scoring. It was Saint Leo’s biggest win since an 8-1 victory against Southeastern last October.

The Lions remain at home to face North Georgia on Saturday night at 7 p.m. The Saints had their opening game of the season against Florida Southern rained out on Thursday night.
