Colleges: Mohammed gives Bulls late victory

Javed Mohammed’s first regular season goal of his USF career gave No.11 South Florida a 1-0 victory at Florida Gulf Coast in Fort Myers on Saturday evening, keeping the Bulls perfect on the season.

Mohammed gave the Bulls victory in the 87th minute when he bent a free kick into the left corner of the net, giving the Bulls their second straight hard-fought victory against an in-state opponent.

Florida Gulf Coast’s Josey Portillo proved a major thorn in the Bulls' side, and almost gave the Eagles the lead in the 21st minute as he fired a shot that came back off USF goalkeeper Jeff Attinella’s crossbar. Christian Raudales also hit the post with a header in the first half for the Eagles, but those chances would be the closest they would come to scoring as Attinella recorded five saves for the shutout.

The game opened up more in the second half, and South Florida came further into the game. Bulls freshman forward Hasani Sinclair came close to breaking the deadlock in the 59th minute when he hit the post. Neither side was able to find the net, though, until Mohammed’s goal clinched the win.

The Bulls return home to face Valparaiso on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. before travelling to face Virginia Tech.
