Sickles standout Boris Simeunovic will continue his soccer career at Florida Southern next fall, but he is hoping to lead the Gryphons to a strong season after their disappointing exit in the district semifinals last season.
Simeunovic already has scored nine goals for the undefeated Gryphons (6-0-2), including a spectacular 30-yard strike in their 3-0 win against Clearwater last week. According to Gryphons coach Tony Calvo, Simeunovic’s leadership has been just as valuable to the side as his goals.
“He’s a good leader,” Calvo said. “He’s one of our captains, and he really puts this team together.”
Simeunovic said he was pleased with the way the Gryphons had started the season, but was wary of reading too much into it after the way last season ended. He was also very happy with the way the freshman group had meshed with the returning upperclassmen on the team.
"We've got a great freshman class that came in, great players like Casey (Cook) and Mike Bajza," Simeunovic said. "They really stepped up up this year, with them being rookies this year, they've given us a big boost of confidence in the center."
