Awards Wrap: Attinella honored by Big East, TopDrawerSoccer.com

South Florida’s Jeff Attinella has been named the Big East Goalkeeper of the Week for the first time in his college career after a pair of shutouts against Valparaiso and Virginia Tech.

Attinella, a former standout at Countryside High, was also named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Week. He recorded three saves in shutting out Valparaiso last Tuesday before making two saves against the Hokies as the Bulls won both games 1-0.

Elsewhere, Attinella’s former Countryside teammate Griffin Gilstrap was named the Atlantic Sun Player of the Week after scoring three goals and adding an assist for Stetson in the Hatters pair of victories over the weekend.

Gilstrap scored twice and added an assist as the Hatters defeated Florida International 3-2 on Friday night, and then scored the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win against Florida Atlantic.

Colleges: Sammons earns SSC Player of the week award

Former Newsome High standout Morgan Sammons has been named the Sunshine State Conference offensive player of the week after she scored both the game-tying and game-winning goals for the Moccasins in a 2-1 upset victory against No.9 Franklin Pierce on Friday night.

Sammons tied the game in the 85th minute, and then found the game-winner in the second minute of overtime. A center back, she became the first defender to win the offensive player of the week award in the Sunshine State Conference’s history.
