USF's Boggs selected by New England in MLS Draft

South Florida midfielder Zak Boggs was taken by the New England Revolution with the 31st pick in the MLS Draft in Philadelphia on Tuesday.

Boggs scored four goals for the Bulls last season, three of which were game-winners, while playing in all 21 games. He was also names as a Lowe’s Senior Class Award Senior All-American.

Boggs will have the opportunity to join other former Bulls in the league, including All-Americans Jeff Cunningham (FC Dallas) and Yohance Marshall (Los Angeles Galaxy), and former U.S. Under-17 and Under-20 national team player Anthony Wallace, who played a season for the Bulls before being drafted by FC Dallas.

Former Wharton standout, and new member of MLS expansion franchise the Philadelphia Union, Nick Zimmerman had a sit down with the club’s website earlier this week.

The Union will play in the opening game of the 2010 MLS season against 2009 expansion side the Seattle Sounders, and one would hope that Zimmerman will be part of the starting 11 for his new side.

Elswhere, Zimmerman’s former New York Red Bulls teammate and roommate Jeremy Hall has been doing some travelling in the last month, first going to South Africa on the Generation adidas tour of the country.

Hall then accompanied Red Bulls teammate Seth Stammler as he traveled to Costa Rica and Haiti as part of Stammler’s Sporting Chance Foundation.

MLS: Zimmerman selected by Union in expansion draft

Former Wharton High standout Nick Zimmerman was one of 10 players selected by the Philadelphia Union in the MLS expansion draft on Wednesday afternoon.

Zimmerman, 22, was drafted in the third round of the MLS draft by the New York Red Bulls earlier this year, and appeared in seven games for the Red Bulls in the 2009 season. He was one of 12 players left unprotected by the side for the expansion draft.

Zimmerman was one of four players with local ties to be left unprotected by his club, but the only one selected. FC Dallas' Anthony Wallace and Blake Wagner, both local products were available, as was the L.A. Galaxy's Yohance Marshall, who attended South Florida. Former Plant standout Bobby Boswell and former Hillsborough County United standout Jeremy Hall were both one of the 11 players protected by the Houston Dynamo and New York Red Bulls respectively.

MLS: Cunningham nominated for MLS MVP, earns second Golden Boot

Jeff Cunningham is one of three players who have been nominated for the Major League Soccer Volkswagen MVP award, giving the former South Florida standout a chance to add to his personal silverware haul this season. Cunningham was nominated alongside the L.A. Galaxy's Landon Donovan and New England's Shalrie Joseph for the honor, the winner of which will be announced on November 19.

Cunningham won the Budweiser Golden Boot as the league’s leading scorer for the second time in his career with 17 goals, including 16 in the last in 15 games, as Dallas made a late push for the playoffs. Cunningham also won the award in 2006, when he scored 16 goals for Real Salt Lake, and is only the second player in MLS history to to have led the league in scoring twice after Carlos Ruiz did so in 2002 and 2003 for the L.A. Galaxy.
